"Embedding robotics into the fabric of the built environment fosters a more interactive and potentially more intimate relationship between us and the spaces we live in." The class Architectural Robotics challenged students to consider the design, technical, social, ecological, and ethical challenges / opportunities of architectural robotics.

This project was completed as a team of three. My main responsibility was the design and construction of the hardware. modeled the design in CAD, constructed prototypes, and engaged with various faculty members to ask quetions about material choices.

The wall is capable of unfolding into a seat or shelf at the convenience of the user. This capability makes it ideal in narrow hallways or small homes. The wall is a wood tambour joined by fabric. Diffused lights in the tambour indicate the motion of the wall & provide gentle passive lighting. The wall is controlled by a gesture sensor for ease of use. Despite having experience working with wood and 3D printing, Axis was a challenge to design. To program the geometry to shape-shift properly and withstand the weight of a seated user, the joints required testing, tight tolerances, and low friction. I spoke with various faculty to improve my understanding of each material's limitations and developed several prototypes of the tambour. I used a mixture of CAD and hand-drawing to develop the final assembly and carefully constructed the assembly using the school's woodshop.
